What is a Mukhtar?

A Mukhtar (Arabic: مختار, meaning "chosen one") is the elected representative of a village or community in Cyprus. They serve as the first point of contact for local administrative matters and are an important link between residents and government authorities.

What does a Mukhtar do?

  1. 1Representing the community to government authorities
  2. 2Certifying local documents and declarations
  3. 3Assisting with residency registration
  4. 4Mediating neighborhood disputes
  5. 5Coordinating with local authorities for community events

When do you need a Mukhtar?

As an expat, you'll most likely need the Mukhtar in these situations:

| Situation | What the Mukhtar does | |-----------|----------------------| | Yellow Slip (MEU1) | Confirms your residency in the community | | Proof of residence | Issues certificates for official purposes | | Special events | Approves gatherings and events in the village |

💡

The Mukhtar usually has fixed office hours. Call ahead to avoid waiting. Bring your passport, rental contract, and photos.

Finding your Mukhtar

Contact details for your local Mukhtar can be found at the Community Office or on the municipal website. In larger cities like Larnaca, each district has its own Mukhtar.

⚠️

A Mukhtar is not a lawyer. For legal matters (contracts, inheritance, disputes), consult a licensed attorney or the municipal legal advice service.
